LifeStreaming With WordPress

When it comes to all the social media that people have, it can be a bit… well, overwhelming sometimes.  It almost feels like you’re trying to drink out of a firehose.  Twitter, Facebook, RSS feeds, Yelp reviews, Brightkite updates… there are hundreds of different ways to tell people what we’re up to when we’re not blogging or doing… whatever else.  The best way would be to aggregate all of those feeds into one section where people can peruse through it without feeling overwhelmed.

On mitchcanter.com I use a plugin called LifeStream by David Cramer.  The concept is pretty simple: take your favorite social networks, add the feeds you want, and when they update it all comes into one central location.

There are quite a few services to choose from, and a Generic RSS feed for any that aren’t listed.

The individual entries are archived in your database, too, just in case you need to access them later (and it makes for easier server load because they’re cached instead of called everytime the page loads).

There are plenty of good options to set too.  You even get the option of creating a digest of all of the different items you’ve done.  For bloggers, this can be a great way to showcase that you have other outlets besides the blog in which you operate.  Sort of bridges the audiences together that way.
